08/19/06 Late Race Pass Ensures Shenandoah Win for Burt:
SHENANDOAH, VA – A late race pass sealed Mark Burt’s second USAC Carolina/Virginia Ford Focus Midget series victory of the
season Saturday night at Shenandoah Speedway. Aron Oakley sat on the pole but started eighth due to inversion. Burt, also
affected by inversion, spent little time at the back of the field. From the drop of the green flag, Burt moved towards the
front.
Burt held off two-time defending series champ and point leader Chase Scott for the win with Oakley coming in third. Andre
Villarreal and Bradley Riethmeyer rounded out the Top 5. “That was fun,” Burt said in Victory Lane. “It was just a tough
race getting through everybody. Everybody came fast this weekend. It was a good run.”
Tyler Brown led the first lap as the cars battled three-wide for second behind him. Scott won the battle for second and passed Brown for the lead on Lap 3. Scott was slowed by caution once when Oakley spun on Lap 7. At the drop of the green flag, Scott took off leaving the only on-track battles for the cars behind him.
Burt continued to work his way through the field until challenging Scott for the lead. The battle for the lead lasted several laps until Burt made the pass around Scott on Lap 33. The last two laps were filled with competition as Scott searched for a way around Burt.
While Scott continues to lead the points battle, Burt’s win and Riethmeyer’s fifth keep the battle for second tight with one race remaining. Burt and Riethmeyer continue to battle for second.
